One of the most cosmopolitan of all the Greek islands, Mykonos has an international reputation and quite justifiably attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world, amongst them many intellectuals and well-known artists. Mykonos is located in the Cyclades islands on the south east of Tinos.
What makes this small (about 16km/10 miles long), arid island so popular? At least initially, it was the exceptionally handsome Cycladic architecture, and the fact that it has so much to offer to the visitors.

First came the jet-setters, artists, and expatriates, as well as the mainland Greeks who opened many of the chic shops and restaurants - all followed by visitors from around the world looking for real Greek holidays.

According to mythology, Mykonos was formed by the petrified bodies of the giants that Hercules killed. Later the island was named after the hero Mykono who was descended from Apollo. Reputed to have some of the best sandy beaches in the Aegean Sea, there is a beach for every taste. The film 'Shirley Valentine' was filmed on one of Mykonos' beaches.
