Room at the top in Kalymnos

This ruggedly beautiful island with its spectacular views is one of the most famous sport climbing holiday destinations in the world. Huge cliffs and massive caves are scattered across the bare limestone hillside, and there are more than 2,000 high-quality routes.

The climbing here is challenging, but the views are a reward in itself.

The three-day festival includes a competition for expert climbers on ‘new’ routes found for the festival, plus marathon-style competitions for less experienced climbers over a wide selection of routes. In the evening, you’ll enjoy good food, music and entertainment, and the chance to exchange climbing stories with fellow enthusiasts from all over the world.

And when you’re not going up…take some time to go down! There’s a diving-themed part to this festival that showcases Kalymno’s fine scuba and free-diving credentials, but even if you just want to relax, don’t miss the opportunity to head for one of the island’s beautiful beaches and spend some time enjoying the crystal clear waters.

LP Content October Ohi Day

On October 28th every year, Greeks all over the world celebrate the fact that someone once said a particularly important “No!”

That’s what “ochi” means, and that’s the one-word response that Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas gave in 1940, when Mussolini’s spokesman asked him if the Axis forces could use Greek territory to gain access to parts of Europe not already occupied by Hitler or Mussolini.

On Ochi Day, all major cities celebrate that brave refusal with a military parade, or a naval parade in coastal towns. Many Greek Orthodox churches also hold special services, and many businesses will close for the day.

Thessaloniki holds a triple celebration on Ochi Day: it’s also the Saint’s Day for St Dimitrios, patron saint of the city, and the day when Thessaloniki gained its freedom from Turkey.

LP Content October Crete Chestnuts

Chestnut Festival in Elos, Crete

This delightful festival is held in the little village of Elos, near the town of Kissamos in the south-west corner of Crete, where every year they celebrate the harvest of their impressively-large and juicy chestnuts.

Join in the party amongst the trees – there’s eating, drinking, music and dancing and the chance to sample chestnut-inspired dishes of all kinds including – of course – roast chestnuts!

And do take a little time-out to enjoy a walk around the rest of the town: wander through the old Venetian Governor’s palace, and perhaps visit the museum to see its mosaics, dating back from Roman times.

The Festival’s exact date is announced when they’re sure that the chestnuts will be ready to harvest – so please check with the Olympic representative at your hotel.
