The Top 5 Things to Do in Plakias (Our Insider’s Tips!)
Plakias is a quaint and peaceful village situated on the south coast of Crete. It is surrounded by stunning mountains to the north and the beautiful Libyan sea to the south. For anyone seeking a restful and relaxing holiday getaway, Plakias is the perfect destination. Its nearby countryside is ideal for breathtaking walks and its spacious sandy bay is tailor made for those lazy summer afternoons. Here are our top things to do when visiting Plakias…
1/ Preveli: Just a 30 minute bus ride away from Plakias, or 45 minutes by boat, is the stunning Preveli Monastery, a picturesque holy site which is steeped in Cretan history. Down below the monastery sits the famous “Palm Beach”, a sandy beach that is flanked by a forest of palm trees that also line a fresh water river which flows directly into the sea. This is a wonderful natural beauty spot that’s well worth a visit.
2/ Beaches: While Plakias’ own beach is one not to miss, there’s also an array of nearby alternatives to choose from with Agios Pavlos, Triopetra and Preveli being three of the most popular. None of the beaches get too crowded so why not book a boat ride out to each one and enjoy the tranquil surroundings? Another popular choice is Souda beach which is approximately a 50 minute stroll from Plakias and is perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
3/ Enjoy the Cretan Way of Life: Take the opportunity to visit some of the beautiful nearby villages and experience the Cretan lifestyle first hand. Charming traditional buildings line the streets and you can browse the stunning local pottery offerings as well as sampling plenty of olive oil and feta cheese. The tavernas offer a warm welcome to tourists and provide a great spot from which to soak up the local atmosphere.
4/ Indulge in Some Fine Cuisine: Plakias is home to a large number of tavernas and restaurants offering a range of speciality cuisines. There are plenty of local delicacies to be tasted with fresh fish a definite local favourite. Local fishermen keep the tavernas well stocked and if you like your seafood, you will be spoiled for choice throughout your stay. Choose one of the beachfront restaurants and watch the sun set with your meal.
5/ Unique Holiday Destination: Olympic Holidays are now the only British Tour operator offering travel to this stunning south coast village. Plakias itself offers an ideal location for a relaxing beach holiday, and the village is also perfectly situated for onward travel to see the rest of Crete’s magnificent south coast.
