This wonderful piece of Cretian history is perched on top of a hill looking down upon the rest of the old town, thus ensuring you are also treated to a spectacular view. Another highlight in Rethymnon is the impressive Venetian Harbor, which contains numerous high quality tavernas that are perfect for when you want to taste some exquisite local cuisine.
2/ Chania: A short drive from Rethymno is the historic town of Chania, the former capital of Crete itself. Chania has historically experienced a great blend of cultures with Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman influences still hugely visible. 3/ Imbros Gorge: An idyllic spot for a leisurely hike, the Imbros Gorge is a stunning ravine with picture-perfect views along the way. Less strenuous than the larger Samaria Gorge, it’s a roughly 8 kilometer walk which will take around two to three hours to complete. Along the way you will see the stunning White Mountains as well as plenty of verdant wildflower meadows. The gorge opens up to the sea at the delightful village of Komitades, the ideal place to sit back and unwind after your stroll.
4/ Lake Kournas: Lake Kournas is an extremely popular spot close to Rethymnon and is the only natural lake to be found on the whole of Crete. It offers scenic views, thanks to a beautiful mountain backdrop, as well as a great chance to get up close with some local wildlife. You can also hire a pedalo and spend the afternoon lazily soaking up the sun on the water.

Go off the map and zip along little known dirt roads, discovering little known treasures as well as taking in a few of the more famous sights.
