The Top 5 Things to Do in Santorini (Our Insider’s Tips!)
The Top 5 Things to Do in Santorini (Our Insider’s Guide!) Located in the southern Aegean Sea, Santorini was formed hundreds of years ago following a gigantic volcanic eruption. The end result of which is a spectacular and unique circle of islands housing a glorious central lagoon. A perfect blend of modern holiday resort and traditional old school Greece, it’s an incredibly popular spot for anyone seeking stunning scenery as well as beautiful beaches. We asked our Santorini reps to give us the scoop on the top 5 things to do in this slice of Grecian paradise...
1/ Volcano: When in Santorini, you really must take the opportunity to examine an active volcano up close. Settled in the centre of the Santorini Caldera, the volcanic island of Nea Kameni offers an once-in-a-lifetime experience that allows you to walk amongst the steaming craters as you enjoy the spectacular views of the surrounding areas. Catch a boat to the island, strap on your walking boots and let one of the local tour guides fill you in on the island’s rich heritage.
2/ Hot Springs: Another experience on offer at Santorini’s volcanic centre is a dip in Nea Kameni’s famous Hot Springs. Heated by the volcanic gasses found in the area, these springs are full of iron and magnesium, and are said to have numerous anti-ageing benefits.
3/ Akrotiri: Much like Pompeii, the ancient Minoan town of Akrotiri was frozen in time due to the effects of a nearby volcanic eruption. Countless buildings have since been uncovered and restored, with many ancient objects and artworks beautifully preserved. This archaeological site is the perfect day trip for any history lover.
4/ Fira to Oia Clifftop Walk: This modest 12km walk takes you right from one end of the main island to the other and is the ideal way to fully appreciate the fabulous scenery Santorini has to offer. The backdrop is outstanding from start to finish, including both the island’s eye-catching landscapes as well as its assorted picturesque villages.
5/ Oia Sunset: While the whole of Santorini is blessed with great natural beauty, it becomes that little bit more special at the close of the day. The island is famed for its sunsets and any holidaymaker visiting the island won’t be able to resist staking out a prime spot in the village of Oia to watch the sky changing from one striking colour to the next. A tip to new visitors to the island is to look into getting a room in one of the hotels in Oia which specifically offers sunset views.
