Diving Information - Scuba Diving FAQs

What equipment do I need to have before the diving course?

Within our program all diving equipment will be provided for
beginner courses, however we would recommend you buy
your own mask, snorkel and fins. All student divers are now
required to have their own course manuals when training
under the PADI System, we recommend you purchase these
before you travel, you can start your studies from home or
during your flight to your destination, this will cut down what
your are required to study when you get to your destination.

I wear glasses or contact lenses, is that a problem?

Not at all. If you wear contact lenses, you shouldn't have
problems wearing them when you dive. If you wear hard
lenses you have the option to have prescription lenses put
into your mask.

Is diving dangerous?

Not really. Statistics show that diving is about as safe as
swimming. Certainly, there are potential hazards - that's why
you need training and certification. Virtually all aquatic animals
are passive and timid. There are a few that can bite or sting
defensively, but you can avoid these by watching where you
put your hands and feet. Divers aren't natural prey for
sharks - more people die each year from bee stings.

When can I fly home after I have been on my diving holiday?

For Dives within the No-Decompression Limits:
Single Dives (a minimum pre-flight surface interval of 12 hours
is suggested).
Repetitive Dives and/or Multiday Dives (a minimum pre-flight
surface interval of 18 hours is suggested), although some
airlines require 14 hours.

This all sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if it's for me.
Is there a way to try SCUBA diving without signing up for
the whole course?

Yes, there is. We offer the 'Discover SCUBA' program, which
is an easy introduction to diving conducted in the pool or a
confined body of water. this is a way for you to experience
the fun and excitement of diving before deciding to enroll in
the Open Water course.

Is it hard to learn to SCUBA diving?

No. In fact, it's probably easier than you imagine, especially if
you're already comfortable in the water. Our entry-level diving
course is split into knowledge development, confined water
(pool) training, and 4 SCUBA training dives in open water. The course is performance based,' which means that you progress
as you learn, and as you demonstrate knowledge and skill.

How old do I have to be to become a certified SCUBA diver?

Ten years old. If you're between 10 and 14,you receive
a Junior Open Water Diver certification, which means you
should dive with a SCUBA-certified adult. When you turn
15,you can upgrade your Junior certification to a regular
Open Water certification.

Do I have to be a great swimmer to SCUBA dive?

No - all you need to be is a reasonable swimmer who is
comfortable and relaxed in the water. The swimming
requirement for certification is a 200 yard nonstop swim
(with no time limit) and a 10 minute tread/float.

How long does it take to become a certified diver?

You'll be diving in less time than you think. Typically, you complete the PADI Open Water Course in four or five days. PADI courses are performance-based, which means your instructor is interested in you
learning to dive, not in how long you sit in a class. This means that you progress at your own pace - depending upon the time you need to become a confident diver who dives regularly.

Do I have to meet any special qualifications or considerations before I can participate in a SCUBA diving class?

No. Generally speaking, anyone in average goodhealth and at least 10 years old can participate. As a precaution, you'll be asked to complete a routine medical questionnaire. If anything on the questionnaire indicates anything to be cautiousabout, you'll check with your physician to make sure it's OK for you to dive.

Is SCUBA diving expensive?

Not really. Like any hobby or recreation, you caninvest a lot or a little, depending on your interest level.
