A stay here is incomplete without a visit to the two main temples, which were originally joined by an avenue of sphinxes. Sacred site of worship through millennia, Luxor temple, is in the town centre while the astonishing Karnak temple is slightly to the north, spread over a 250 acre site. The West bank, opposite Luxor is a huge necropolis with the most amazing array of tombs and mortuary temples. This was the burial place for Pharohs and noblemen and the many ornate tombs are still decorated with colourful hierolglyphics.The valley also houses the famous tomb of King Tutankhamun, discovered intact, in the early 1900's. Howard Carter. Priceless treasures discovered in the tomb are now on public display in the Cairo museum. Other interesting sites in this area include the Valley of the Queens, the temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. All are set amongst the desert landscapes of the Kharga Oasis. |
