Anavyssos is an attractive settlement and holiday destination popular for its thriving town and sweeping bay.

Description

The town of Anavyssos sits at just under 50 kms from Athens as the coastal road sweeps down towards the tip of the Saronic Gulf peninsula at Sounio.

In the summer months it is a very popular place to visit, particularly among windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts. For those seeking a slightly a quieter time, Paralia and Palaea Phocaea nearby have great beaches and tourist facilities and, a little further to the south, Thymari beach is one of the least crowded places for swimming. Further south still, the beach at Legrena and the three sandy beaches of Sounio are well worth a visit. Getting to the beach from the town is an easy trip by bus or taxi and the area surrounding it is flat and so cycling is also a popular way to see what the area has to offer.

As in all the resorts on the Athens Coast, from here it is easy to take in a whole host of historical attractions. This region was very influential in times past and evidence suggests people have been living here for many thousands of years, even before the rise of the Greek culture. From Anavyssos, it is an easy journey north to visit the Acropolis in Athens as well as the Temple of Poseidon in the south at Sounio.

Particularly popular with the young windsurfing crowd, the wide sandy bay of Anavyssos attracts a wide range of holidaymakers in summer. Culture-vultures are also well placed to explore the monuments and antiquities along this long coastal stretch.
