In the north of the city, Metaxourgeio was once a largely rural area on the outskirts of Athens. The construction of a factory in the early 19th century brought an influx of craftsmen, tradespeople and small business owners after which the area flourished until the 1970s when it fell out of favour for a while. Today, however, an artistic resurgence has lent it a distinctly bohemian air and it has become a fashionable magnet for free spirits and the avant-garde alike. Among its many art galleries, museums and trendy eateries, a strong sense of community pervades, reflected in the urban gardening, street art and performance spaces that adorn the narrow streets and cobbled pedestrian alleyways. The artisans and cottage industries bestow Metaxourgeio with a kind of beatnik glamour and village feel.

The axis of the neighbourhood is Avdi Square, where both visitors and residents come to enjoy the festivals and other gatherings which take place from time to time in the open greenery of the square. Adjacent to it are restaurants, theatres and galleries. Each week, a large, open-air market trades fresh produce to grateful customers, while numerous Asian grocery stores and clothing outlets are to be found in the vicinity.
