Emborio Holidays

Emborio Holidays at a glance

Emborio (or Niborio) is the port and the only settlement of the island. It is an idyllic and picturesque village built at the foot of a mountain, and is the only inhabited area in Halki today. Emborio is full of Italian-style houses cascading down to the water's edge and set around a horseshoe shaped bay.

Emborio Holidays - Destination Profile

The steeple of St. Nicholas is the work of the Rhodian architect Lefteris Sellas. Its tower leans over an arch made of ancient marbles taken from the temple of Apollo. The clock tower (a donation of the Halkians living abroad) rises before the unique Town Hall. The harbour front is around 400 meters in length and offers a sprinkling of cafes and a couple of tavernas.

Chorio The old settlement of Halki (until early 19th Century), now mainly ruined, is situated on the slopes below the hill top Kastro, a position concealed from view from the sea, and high above the initial marauding of pirates. It is about a 35 minute walk up the concrete road, which winds up the valley.

Panormitis Restoration work has greatly improved the aspect of this small monastery, some 15 minutes above Chorio, up a bulldozed track to the right. The ancient Byzantine church and the main buildings are undergoing refurbishment.

The Roulla Apartments are typical Greek style self-catering and if you have holidayed in Greece before you will know exactly what to expect. They are basic but were very clean with no problems, save for a couple of ants who would take advantage of any uncovered food but really weren’t a problem. The sleeping area is on what we would call a mezzanine level and was very comfortable and represented a good use of space. However the staircase up is bijou so the apartment couldn’t be recommended for those who are either on the tall or wide side. It possibly isn’t suitable for children as the bannister is very low however ours had an additional single bed downstairs which could be used for a smaller person. The views across the water and Halki are spectacular and there is a generously sized shared terrace complete with comfortable wooden furniture as opposed to the standard plastic garden variety.  Some websites suggested that the studios might have an outside bathroom but this wasn’t the case for ours or either of the two studios which were next to us. Halki is small but perfectly formed so be prepared to bring lots of reading material with you especially if you plan to spend two weeks. There are two obvious walks – one to the castle and one to the monastery with several others across rocky goat paths so bring sturdy shoes if you plan to do any more than the main two. You can pick up a very basic ‘Halki Review’ map free in most of the shops. The landscape is stunning in a very barren way with goats a plenty and many ruins of the old Halki to explore. The main beach was fairly quiet in June, was sandy and a perfect beach for relaxing or swimming with a couple of others being rocky but more secluded and better for snorkelling. There are about 10 restaurants on the Island, about 5 supermarkets and a couple of bars. Provisions and eating out were generally good value and while quality and pricing varied it was similar to UK prices and we didn’t have a bad meal. We can definitely recommend the Halki honey which has a toffee like quality and on walking up to the monastery you will see the honey bee boxes where it probably comes from.  In summary Halki would be a good choice for a week’s holiday or two if you don’t mind entertaining yourself. If you have been to Symi it is much smaller, less touristy and maybe what you had hoped it would have been. Similar to Symi you will start your holiday with a short boat ride, and possibly a Mythos on board, and what could be better than that.
