Emborio (or Niborio) is the port and the only settlement of the island. It is an idyllic and picturesque village built at the foot of a mountain, and is the only inhabited area in Halki today. Emborio is full of Italian-style houses cascading down to the water's edge and set around a horseshoe shaped bay. The steeple of St. Nicholas is the work of the Rhodian architect Lefteris Sellas. Its tower leans over an arch made of ancient marbles taken from the temple of Apollo. The clock tower (a donation of the Halkians living abroad) rises before the unique Town Hall.
The harbour front is around 400 meters in length and offers a sprinkling of cafes and a couple of tavernas.
