Our opinion: The Elpida offers excellent value as a base for an exciting, flexible holiday in this stunning region.

One of the first things you notice about this attractive, traditional style hotel is the glorious sapphire blue pool taking centre stage on a commanding stone terrace which surveys Istron and the arresting curve of beautiful Mirampelo bay below. The backdrop of the undulating mountains in the distance and acres of greenery in the foreground complete the scene. The Elpida Hotel has an intimate, authentic feel to it with colourful, warm interiors, from the lobby to the individually styled, low-rise self-catering apartments dotted among the beautiful mountain scenery.

The big advantage of this functional, good-value hotel is that everything is close at hand: the village of Kalo Chorio is a short walk away which will deliver you in among the inviting tavernas and restaurants for a fresh choice of meal each day, or for the place to go for evening entertainment that won't disappoint. Agios Nikolaos is 10 kms distant, and well worth a visit to experience the intensity of its nightlife or, by day, to enjoy the bustle of the harbour or to examine ancient antiquities in the museum. In between times, a leisurely 15-minute stroll and you're at the sandy beach for a fun day in the sun. Back at the hotel after your day taking in the rays, enjoy a game of pool or table football in the games room before relaxing on the terrace with a drink; the sunset here is incredible.
