Our opinion: A great base from which to explore Malia and nearby Hersonissos town.

The Kyknos Beach Hotel & Bungalows is a family-run establishment built with loving care by the owner, Georgios Tsamandouras. It is situated between two lively resorts, Malia and Stalis and is just 200 metres from a pretty sandy beach with the backdrop of the rolling hills.

The attractive two storey, whitewashed bungalows sit adjacent to the main building of the hotel, looking out over the garden towards the big, blue, oblong pool. Cut into it is a little island of pretty vegetation. Alongside, on the terrace and grass are loungers and parasols, and nearby is the pool bar to ensure you are comfortable spending the day doing as little as possible. Children have their own pool, with a slide into the water and a separate, shallow section with a toadstool fountain, for paddling and splashy fun.

More energetic guests might like to knock a ball around one of the two tennis courts, one of which is floodlit to take advantage of the cooler, later hours, or play a round of mini golf. Inside, billiards, table tennis and darts are available. A variety of hot and cold specialities are served buffet-style in the main restaurant which has an al fresco terrace giving beautiful views across to the sea. Cooking demonstrations are often held to fit in with the theme of the evening and twice weekly, the staff put on a show in the pool area which might be folklore, or a magic show, or even a pool party.
