The port (Gialos), with its own life and market activity, is the appropriate place for enjoyable walks. To the left side, of the port stands St. Irini, a chapel of amazing beauty, built in the 17th century. It's a peculiar structure with two altars, one older than the other, that were supposedly used for the Orthodox and the Catholic cults respectively. The path from St. Irini leads to Valmas and then to Kolitsani, two small, remote sandy beaches.

Mylopotas, located 2km south of Ios Town, is home to the longest beach (1km) on the island. Because of its fine golden sand it attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world, every year.

Ios and Mylopotas Holidays - Things to see

Ios Town: Also known as the village, Ios Town is a dazzling mix of white houses and blue domed churches. There are ruins of the Venetian fortress, built in 1400 by Marco Crispi, remains of ancient walls and 12 windmills above the town. Ios town is the liveliest part of the island with several decent bars and a few excellent clubs for all tastes in music.

Gialos: The port of Gialos, or Ios Port, has a busy harbour, with yachts and fishing boats, good seafood and tavernas. It is much quieter than Ios Town. On the left of the port near the entrance, is the beautiful 17th century church of St. Irene. It is structured in a peculiar way with two altars, one older than the other and it is assumed that they were used by the Orthodox and Catholics respectively. Gialos and the area around the port is the perfect starting point for many beautiful walks around the island.

The Ruins of the Medieval Castle: The remains of the ancient town built where today's capital is situated. The ruins of the medieval castle built in 1937 are worth visiting. You can also find the Archaeological Museum on the ground floor of the Town Hall, as well the museum of Modern Art "Zean Mari Ntro" and the museum of Traditional Art.

Homer's Grave: Do not forget to visit Homer's grave, who was the most famous poet of the ancient world, at Plakoto on the northern part of Amorgos. According to tradition, Homer, during his trip to Athens from Samos Island, descended on Ios where the locals posed him an enigma according to their local customs. When the poet proved unable to solve it, he was killed and buried on the island.

Boat: Ios has an extensive network of ferry connections; there are direct ferries to Paros (2 hours) with connections through Paros to Mykonos (4hours), Samos (10 hours) & Athens (8 hours).

Bus: There is a frequent bus service between the port Yialos and Mylopotas via Hora. There is also a bus service between Yialos and Ag. Theodoti.

Mylopotas has a popular beach of fine golden sand is located 2km south of Ios Town and is the longest beach in Ios at 1km in length. The bay offers cafes, bars and restaurants. Mylopotas beach offers plenty of entertainment, water sports and beautiful walks around the coastal area.

Psathi beach is characterised by peace and tranquillity since it is still untouched by mass tourism. It is popular among windsurfers because of the high waves on windy days.
