Gaios is the capital village of Paxos and main harbour. The village was named after St Gaius, a deciple of St Paul. With a stunning natural harbour famous for its vivid aquamarine water, Lakka is a former fishing village which has become a popular holiday centre. The bay which is almost completely sheltered from the open sea is excellent for swimming, water sports and for mooring boats including overnight. Lakka retains the intimate Paxiot charm of its narrow streets and secluded squares, with their variety of cafes and tavernas. Within easy walking distance of the village are quiet beaches with lovely water for swimming. There is a very good taxi service both by road and by sea to other parts of Paxos and Lakka is on the main bus route to other parts of the island.
