The 'Bourtzi' is situated here. It is a tiny peninsula in the harbour which used to be a Venetians citadel with remains of the 13 century wall and canons. Monastery of Evangalistra has some amazing surroundings and is open for the public to visit. Evangelistra also has a small museum with various objects from its history. There is a bus that links the monastery and Chora several times a day. The medieval capital Kastro reached by one of the boat trips around the island, or by driving almost all the way and then walking. Don't miss the Church of Christ and the old houses. Alexandros Papadiamantis Museum - It is the house in which Alexandros Papadiamandis, one of the most important Greek authors of the past century, used to live. The 1st floor is preserved as the house of Alexandros Papadiamandis with its original furniture and objects of the time, whereas the ground floor is functioning as an exhibition room. Getting Around on Kolios HolidaysFerry: There are numerous hydrofoils to Volos and Agios Constantinos on the mainland and several a week to and from Thessaloniki, as well as daily connections to other nearby islands in the Sporades chain like Skopelos and Alonissos that can be visited on a day trip. Boat: To reach the north coast beaches, adjacent islands, and historic Kastro, it is easier to go by caique. These smaller vessels sail frequently from the fishing harbour west of the Bourtzi fortress. Bus: Getting around by bus is very easy. Skiathos has public bus service along the south coast of the every half hour from 8:30am to 10pm (every 20 minutes for July and August.) Car: An excellent way of getting around during Kolios holidays, car hire gives you complete flexibility as well as the ability to see more of the island. Kolios Holidays - BeachesKoukounaries: Probably the most famous and best beach in Skiathos, with fine golden sand leading up to the shade of the Koukounaries pine trees (umbrella pines). The beach has excellent tourist facilities including 3 beach tavernas, 3 water sports schools and 2 kiosks for cigarettes, soft drinks, etc. Kolios: A lovely beach ideal for relaxation, it has a shallow shelf to the water making it perfect for children and the less confident swimmers. More accomplished swimmers can head out to deeper waters to enjoy scuba diving and the chance to see the underwater wildlife including octopus. Aghia Eleni: Translating to St Helene this nice beach is 1km away from Koukounaries beach. The beach owes its name to the white small church standing out against blue of the sea, the green of the trees and the golden sand. Banana Beach - Excellent beach with a lively beach cafes and restaurants situated close to Koukounaries. A section of this beach is predominantly frequented by naturalist bathers. Platanias - Long, sandy, gently shelving beach ideal for families. Troulos - This areas of Skiathos has an amazing choice of excellent beaches at. |
