  • The Town Hall in the famous Miaoulis Square in Hermoupoli

  • The Apollo Municipal Theatre. The Apollon Theatre is situated behind the Town Hall in Hermoupolis. It was built in 1861 to the design of the French architect Chabeau and its outward appearance presents a small-scale copy of the Scala of Milan.

    The church of the Christ's Transfiguration (Metamorphosis). Visit the church of Hermoupolis with its excellent woodcarvings and icons.

  • The Temple of Ayios Nicolaos, that is the third largest church of Greece.

  • The village of Posedonia that was named after the second greatest town of the island of Posedonia, which is also named Delagrazia after the small church of Virgin Mary (Madona Dela Grazia).

  • Old city of Ano Syros founded in the 13th century. Ano Syros translates in English as 'Upper Syros' and its walls, narrow lanes and arches, has kept much of its medieval character. The steep streets and countless steps lend the town the charm of a bygone age.


Beaches


  • Agathopes is considered as one of the best beaches of the island along with Galissas.

  • Many beautiful beaches are easily accessible and should not be missed: Azolimnos, Vari, Abela, Achladi, Megas Gialos, Kimata (small bay), Varvaroussa.

  • From Kini you can take small boats to the northern secluded beaches of the island.


Activities


  • Drive to the sandy Agathopes beach for a swim, or to the resort of Galissas for windsurfing and waterskiing

  • Hire a fishing boat and explore the small caves and coves in the north of the island

  • Enjoy the opera productions that take place in the Apollon theatre during peak season.

  • Local products include the famous loukoumi (Greek delight), almond pie and liqueurs.

Great Excursions

Grammata Beach Cruise

One day boat excursion. We will leave from Galissas and sails along the west coast of Syros. We will stop to several beaches, in particular Grammata beach which is only accessible by boat. Food and wine are included in the price.


To get there:

Fly to Mykonos airport from the UK airports. Then transfer to Hermoupoli port in Syros by hydrofoil/ferry.
Local transfer from Hermoupoulis to Galissa is approximately 10 kilometres.

To get around:

By ferries: Syros is connected daily with Piraeus (Athens airport) (4 hours with a ferry, 2 hours with a catamaran), Tinos, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos and Amorgos. Four times a week with Andros, Santorini, and Ios. Three times a week with Folegandros and Sikinos.

By Taxi: You will find many taxis in Ermoupoli at Miaoulis Square and at the dock.

By bus: The buses of the public bus company (KTEL) serve all the areas near Ermoupoli (Ano Syros, Vrontado, Dili) and all the villages.

By Car: Car hire can be organised locally on the island.
