The cove of Akyarlar is 22 kms from the centre of Bodrum. It stretches between Akyarlar and Koca Points, one and a half kilometres to the east. Akyarlar Point is the eastern end of the Bodrum Peninsula, where slices of white rocks form ravines.

This is the closest point to the Greek island of Kos. The distance is only five kms. Akyarlar, which is located on the eastern shore of the cove, used to be a village of fishermen and sponge divers. Now it has become a popular resort in Bodrum with its warm sea and cool breezes.

Akyarlar Holidays - Destination Profile

Once you get to the waterfront there are fisherman¿s cottages on the right and restaurants in the centre and the moon shaped beach on the left. It is one of the more popular resorts with windsurfing experts. The strong winds that come from above on the hills mostly blow from the land towards the sea.

Those who find its beach too crowded can choose move on to the village of Kemer further up. The Huseyin Point Lighthouse was built by the French in 1931. The area below the lighthouse is the sandy beach is called "Kum Hamami" (the Sand Bath).

Mausoleum: This is Bodrum's oldest antiquity and was built by Artemisia II in honour of her husband King Mausolos. The monumental tomb became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. After the Mausoleum was destroyed by an earthquake in the 12th century, an exhibition about what the Mausoleum probably looked like, together with a large model, provide a vivid lesson on the history of the area which was then called Halicarnassos.

Amphi Theatre: The theatre is another witness to the great past of Bodrum. Situated in the hillside over looking Bodrum this theatre whose capacity is around 13.000 was built during the Carian reign in the Hellenistic age (330 - 30 BC.). The theatre consists of three different sections: a place for the audience, a place for an orchestra and the stage. It became an open-air museum after the excavations in 1973.

St. Peters Castle: The most prominent feature of Bodrum is the castle of St. Peter. The castle's origins date back to the knights of St. John but now it is one of the finest museums in this region where you get wonderful views of the town and sea, are several mighty towers, a chapel, dungeon and Turkish bath, all set in gardens and linked by steep steps and passageways.

Visit Ephesus: This site is about 160 km North of Bodrum can be reached in approximately two and a half hours by bus. A city once renowned throughout the Classical world as a major trading port, a metropolis of some 250,000 inhabitants and a religious and cultural center. It was also the home of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Getting Around on Akyarlar Holidays

Boat: There are many types of cruises that link all the resorts an villages around the area, take a Gullet cruise or a Blue Voyage cruise to explore Bodrum and the surrounding areas.

Bus: The local bus (known as Dolmus) is normally a white mini bus that travels around the resorts. There are no specified bus stops, so to stop the Dolmus just flag one down.

Taxi There are numerous taxis in all towns and resorts and are recognisable by their chequered black and yellow bands.

Shopping through the narrow streets of Bodrum between the white walls is one of the pleasures you must try here. The Turkish crafts make it impossible to resist buying something. The most popular objects for the holiday maker are of course carpets; but the varied leather, copper and bronze wares, silver and gold, handicrafts.

Akyarlar Holidays - Beaches

Gumbet is only 2-3 km away from Bodrum and recently is becoming almost a resort into itself. The area features one of the longest and most popular beaches on the peninsula. Gümbet is also one of the most popular water sports centers with water-skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, etc. available.

Bitez lies 7 km west of Bodrum, in the bay next to Gumbet. The beach is sandy, with plenty of sunloungers and umbrellas for sunbathing.

Ortakent occupies the next bay to Bitez following the peninsula round to the west. The very large beach is popular with families, although the water rapidly becomes quite deep.
