Travelling to Portugal, including The Algarve and Madeira
Everything you need to know before you go
This page gives specific information about travelling to Portugal. Please also see our main Travelling with Confidence section for general information and details about arriving back in the UK after your holiday.
Travel restrictions and entry requirements are in place for most countries and can change with little notice. It is your responsibility to check the relevant local government websites and comply with all up to date entry requirements for your destination before you travel.
Current requirements for travelling to Portugal
- Complete a Passenger locator form.
- All arrivals in Portugal must provide either a proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test, undertaken within the 72 hour period before arrival, or Antigen test, verified by a certified entity undertaken within the 48 hours before arrival.
- If you haven't been vaccinated, you will have to quarantine for 14 days.
- If you have been vaccinated, you are exempt from quarantine, but must present proof of two COVID-19 vaccinations completed at least 14 days before travel (as well as a negative test result). If you live in England, Portugal will accept the NHS app or your NHS letter to demonstrate your COVID-19 vaccination status. You should not use your NHS vaccine appointment card to demonstrate your vaccine status. Failure to provide proof of vaccination and PCR test may result in your carrier not allowing you to travel.
Please refer to UK Government Foreign Travel Advice website for further updates. We recommend that you sign up for the FCDO travel advice email alert, so you automatically receive the latest travel alert for the destination you are travelling to. You must have adequate travel insurance in place for your holiday.
