Albania’s coastline is one of the most beautiful in Europe, with clear water, dramatic mountains, and a mix of lively resorts and quiet hidden beaches. The best coastal areas are mainly in the south along the Ionian Sea.

Southern Coast (Ionian Sea – best overall)

This is where you’ll find the most famous and scenic beaches.

Ksamil is often considered the top beach destination in Albania. It has white sand, shallow turquoise water, and small islands just offshore that you can swim or paddle to. It’s very popular in summer and can get busy, but it’s ideal if you want that “tropical” look.

Just north of Ksamil, Sarandë is the main seaside town. The beaches here are more built up, but it’s a great base for exploring the area, with plenty of restaurants and easy access to other beaches nearby.

Further up the coast, Himarë offers a more relaxed feel. It has a mix of sandy and pebbly beaches, clearer water, and fewer crowds than Sarandë. Nearby beaches like Livadhi and Potami are especially well regarded.

Dhërmi is one of the most scenic spots on the Riviera. The beach is long, with crystal-clear water and a dramatic mountain backdrop. It’s popular with a slightly younger crowd and has a mix of relaxed daytime atmosphere and some nightlife.

Close to Dhërmi, Jalë Beach is smaller and more secluded, with very clear water. It’s often chosen for a quieter stay but can still be lively in peak season.

Borsh is notable for having one of the longest beaches in Albania. It’s much less developed, so it feels quieter and more natural, even in summer.

This whole stretch between Vlorë and Sarandë is known as the Albanian Riviera, and the coastal road itself is part of the experience, with sweeping views of the sea and mountains.

Around Vlorë (transition point)

Vlorë marks the point where the Adriatic Sea meets the Ionian. The beaches here are easier to reach and less dramatic than further south, but still good.

Nearby, the Karaburun Peninsula offers more untouched and wild beaches. These are often reached by boat and are less crowded, with very clear water.

Northern Coast (Adriatic Sea)

The northern coastline is quite different. It’s flatter, with sandy beaches and warmer, shallower water.

Durrës is the closest beach city to Tirana and is very popular, especially with locals. It has long sandy beaches but is more developed and less scenic than the south.

Further north, areas like Golem and Shëngjin offer wide, sandy beaches that are good for families and people who prefer easier swimming conditions. These areas are more about convenience and space than dramatic views.

Overall

The best beaches in Albania are generally in the south, where the Ionian coast provides clearer water, more dramatic scenery, and more variety. Ksamil is best for iconic views, Dhërmi and Himarë offer a good balance of beauty and atmosphere, and Borsh is ideal if you want something quieter.
