Sightseeing in Naxos

Naxos offers a wonderful mix of history, traditional villages, mountain landscapes and beautiful coastal scenery, making it one of the most diverse islands in the Cyclades for sightseeing and exploration.

Naxos Town (Chora) is the island’s charming capital, known for its Venetian architecture, narrow alleyways and lively waterfront. The town’s most famous landmark is the Portara, a giant marble gateway overlooking the sea and one of the most iconic sunset spots in the Greek islands.

Visitors can explore traditional mountain villages such as Filoti, Halki and Apiranthos, where stone houses, shaded squares and local tavernas offer a glimpse into authentic island life. These villages are also home to historic churches, small museums and traditional workshops.

Naxos is rich in ancient history and mythology, with several archaeological sites and impressive marble statues known as the Kouroi scattered across the island. The island is also linked to Greek mythology, as Mount Zas — the highest mountain in the Cyclades — is said to have been where Zeus was raised.

The island’s fertile landscape, olive groves and scenic walking trails make it perfect for exploring by car or on foot, while its long sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters offer spectacular coastal views throughout the island.

Whether discovering ancient ruins, wandering through traditional villages or enjoying breathtaking mountain and sea scenery, sightseeing in Naxos offers a perfect blend of culture, history and authentic Cycladic charm.
