Santorini Info

Health and Safety

Olympic Holidays wants you to remain safe and healthy whilst abroad, so it is very important that you take a few moments to read the following information.

Swimming Pools: Make sure that you familiarise yourself and your party with the pool layout and depths before you take your first plunge. Do not swim if the water becomes unclear, and if you cannot see the bottom of the pool, please inform your Olympic Holidays Representative. You should not swim for at least one hour after eating, and never swim if you have been drinking alcohol. Do not dive into the pool, especially if the water depth is less than 1.5m.

Be aware that pools are usually not supervised by lifeguards and so, as a general rule, avoid using the pool when there is nobody else around and never use the pool out of “opening hours”.

Sunbathing: The sun is enticing, however, it is a fact of life that anyone who goes out in the sun risks sunburn, whether it is on the beach, on a boat, or just walking around. A high-protection sun cream should be used for the first few days of your holiday before you move on to the lower factor creams. Remember to re-apply sun creams frequently after swimming or whilst taking part in physical activities, as perspiration will break down the SPF.

Child Safety: At the start of your holiday, we ask you to spend a little time with the younger members of your party discussing safety and covering such topics as balconies, glass doors and reminding them not to use any lift without you.

Please acquaint them with all aspects of pool safety and supervise your children AT ALL TIMES whilst they are in the pool, or in the vicinity of the pool. This should also apply to any playground within the accommodation. Safety requirements of cots and highchairs vary overseas, so it is worth taking a moment to ensure that you are happy with the standard.

Health Tips: When in hot countries, always remember to drink plenty of water and bear in mind that alcohol speeds dehydration. Due to a high mineral content in the tap water, it is advisable to drink bottled water and avoid ice as much as possible.

Cuisine overseas can vary from home and may contain ingredients, oils and spices that your system is not used to, therefore it is advisable not to overindulge, especially at the beginning of your holiday. Should you require any medical assistance during your stay, please see your Olympic Holidays Representative or App for the 24-hour medical emergency contact number.

Bathroom Safety: As most bathroom floors are tiled, and some accommodations do not provide non-slip bath/shower mats, please take extra care when the floor becomes wet and also please take extra care whilst showering to ensure you do not slip.

Glass Safety: Please take care as you approach any glass patio or main doors, as it is often difficult to see that they are closed in bright sunlight. For those of you travelling with young children, please be aware that in most countries it is not a legal obligation to fit “toughened” or safety glass.

Balconies: Special care should be taken around patios and terraces, as these areas may become slippery, especially after swimming. If you are travelling with young children, please supervise them at all times when on balconies and never leave furniture near railings, as they may be tempted to climb up. For your own safety, never lean or sit on balcony railings and do not attempt to climb between or jump from balconies.

Lift Safety: Do not smoke when inside a lift, and under no circumstances should you use it in the event of a fire. Children should never use a lift unless accompanied by an adult. Not all lifts are fitted with internal doors, so beware, as the outer wall of the lift is left exposed. In these cases, you should stand well away from the door area and pay special attention to any young children.

Gas Safety: If there are any gas appliances within your accommodation, please check them for any obvious faults or defects. Ensure they are turned off properly when not in use.

Electrical Appliances: Please remember the dangers of using any electrical appliances with wet hands or with bare feet on wet floors. Before use, ensure any electrical equipment which you have brought with you from home is compatible with the local electricity supply.

Security: We recommend that you take care whilst on holiday as you would at home. Keep windows and doors locked when you are out of the room and while sleeping. We suggest that you hire a safety deposit box for your money, passports and other items of value. Take care of your room key and do not take any items of value to the beach, the pool or leave them in hired cars.

Fire Safety: On arrival at your accommodation, please read any fire safety literature provided in your room. Familiarise yourself with all emergency exit routes, the location of fire extinguishers and, if applicable, the fire alarm. If you discover a fire, alert fellow guests, activate the alarm if this has not already been done and leave the property.

Never take risks that may endanger you or others, and never re-enter the building until instructed to do so by the person in charge.

Roads and Pavements:

Please take care when walking, especially at night, as there is often no street lighting. Always walk as far away from the roadside as possible, and be aware of uneven surfaces, potholes and ditches. It is advisable to carry a torch at night and wear sensible footwear. If driving overseas, please be aware of local regulations and wear seat belts where fitted. Also, never drink and drive, as this is an offence in most countries.

Mopeds, Quad Bikes and 2-Seater Buggies:

We do not recommend the hiring of any of these types of vehicle, as the differing road conditions overseas can be extremely dangerous for those not familiar with these forms of transport. Many rental companies do not automatically offer comprehensive insurance. Should you decide to hire one of these vehicles against our recommendations, ensure you always wear a helmet on mopeds and quad bikes and take out full insurance cover. Always wear appropriate clothing, i.e. not shorts or swimwear.
