Holiday Hints & Tips – Mykonos

Essentials

Carry some cash, as smaller tavernas, beach bars and taxis may prefer it.

Cards are widely accepted across Mykonos, but having some Euros is always useful.

Keep ID or a copy of your passport with you, especially for ferry travel and nightlife venues.

Please note that on Sundays, some supermarkets, banks and smaller shops may operate reduced opening hours.

Beaches & Beach Clubs

Mykonos is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, stylish beach clubs and crystal-clear waters.

Popular beaches such as Paradise, Super Paradise and Psarou can become very lively during the day and evening, especially in peak summer months.

Sunbeds and umbrellas are available at most organised beaches, though prices can vary considerably depending on location and season.

Some quieter beaches such as Agios Sostis and Fokos offer a more relaxed atmosphere with fewer facilities.

Eating & Dining

Meals are relaxed and dining is an important social part of Greek culture.

Dinner is often eaten later in the evening, usually after 8:30 pm.

Sharing dishes (meze style) is very common and recommended for trying local cuisine.

You may receive a complimentary dessert or local drink after your meal.

Nightlife

Mykonos is internationally famous for its nightlife and beach parties.

Bars and clubs generally become busy later in the evening, often after midnight.

Please drink responsibly and stay hydrated, particularly during hot weather.

Taxis late at night can be limited and queues are common during peak season.

Weather & Sun

The summer sun is extremely strong, particularly during July and August.

Use high SPF sun cream, wear hats and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

The island can also become windy, especially in exposed beach areas.

Transport & Walking

Roads can be narrow, steep and busy during summer months.

The streets within Mykonos Town are cobbled and uneven in places, so comfortable footwear is highly recommended.

Parking can be difficult in busy areas, particularly around Mykonos Town and popular beaches.

Local buses are a popular and affordable way to travel around the island.

Car Hire

You do not require an International Driving Permit to hire a car — your standard photocard driving licence is sufficient.

Please drive carefully as roads can be narrow and local driving styles can be fast-paced.

Safety

Mykonos is generally very safe for tourists, however please take care of personal belongings in busy nightlife areas, ports and beaches.

Use licensed taxis or pre-booked transport whenever possible.

Practical Tips

Toilet paper is often placed in a bin rather than flushed due to older plumbing systems.

English is widely spoken throughout the island, especially in tourist areas.

Mosquito repellent can be useful during warmer evenings.

Beach clubs and restaurants can become very busy during summer, so reservations are recommended where possible.
