Aegina is one of the best bases in the Saronic Gulf for short excursions and island-hopping. Because of its central location between Athens, the Peloponnese and the nearby islands, visitors can easily take boat trips, cultural tours, swimming cruises and nature excursions, many of them possible within a single day.
One of the most popular excursions is to Moni, a tiny uninhabited pine-covered island just off the fishing village of Perdika. Small boats run frequently during summer, and the crossing takes only about 10–20 minutes. Moni is famous for its crystal-clear waters, snorkeling, and free-roaming peacocks and deer.
For organised sea trips around the Saronic Gulf, companies offer daily cruises, sunset tours, swimming trips and private boat charters around nearby islands and hidden coves. You can find the small tickets offices down in the port of Aegina.
Another favourite excursion is to Agistri, a smaller and greener island only 10–15 minutes away by ferry. Agistri is known for pine forests, turquoise water and relaxed beaches such as Dragonera and Aponisos. Many visitors rent bicycles or scooters to explore the island’s coastal roads and tiny villages.
Within Aegina itself, there are several land excursions. Visitors often take trips to the Temple of Aphaia, one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Greece, situated on a hilltop surrounded by pine forest. Other popular stops include the Monastery of Agios Nektarios, the abandoned Byzantine settlement of Paleochora and traditional villages such as Perdika and Souvala.
Outdoor enthusiasts can join cycling and hiking excursions with operators such as Aegina bike tours, which organise guided rides through olive groves, pistachio orchards and coastal roads. Water-based activities are also common, including scuba diving, private boating and fishing experiences.
