East Crete Beaches
Vai Beach
Vai is one of the most distinctive beaches in Crete because of its huge natural palm forest — the largest in Europe — combined with bright turquoise water and golden sand. It feels more tropical than most Greek beaches.
What makes Vai special
- Thousands of Cretan date palms right behind the beach
- Clear, calm water with gentle entry
- Easy access compared with many wild Cretan beaches
- Beautiful viewpoints above the beach for photos
The beach is very popular with day-trippers but still worth visiting, especially early or late in the day.
Voulisma Beach
Voulisma Beach — often called “Golden Beach” — is one of the easiest-to-reach turquoise beaches in Crete. It’s on the north coast near Agios Nikolaos and is famous for its bright blue shallow water and soft sand.
It’s less wild than beaches like Balos or Elafonissi, but much easier and more comfortable for a simple beach day.
Water colour
The sea here is the main attraction:
- vivid turquoise,
- crystal clear,
- calm on many days,
- shallow near shore.
On sunny mornings it can look almost Caribbean.
Potamos Beach
Potamos Beach is a quieter sandy beach on the north coast of Crete, near Malia. It’s popular with traveller’s who want the convenience of the area without the crowded party atmosphere of central Malia beaches.
Compared with other beaches in Crete, Potamos is more low-key and spacious.
Wide sandy beach
- Long stretch of sand
- Clear blue water
- Usually cleaner and calmer feeling than central Malia
- relaxed swimming
- couples
- quieter beach days
South Crete Beaches
Makry Gialos
Makry Gialos (also spelled Makrigialos) is one of the most relaxed beach towns in southeast Crete. Compared with the famous western beaches, it’s quieter, easier, and better for a laid-back stay rather than a quick sightseeing stop.
The main beach sits right beside the village, so you can walk from cafés and tavernas straight onto the sand.
The main beach
- Long sandy shoreline
- Calm, shallow water
- Usually warmer sea than north-coast beaches
- Good protection from large waves
Best for:
- families,
- easy swimming,
- long relaxed beach days,
Unlike Balos or Elafonissi, it’s more about comfort and atmosphere than dramatic scenery.
Preveli Beach
Preveli is one of the most unusual beaches in Crete because it combines:
- a palm forest,
- a freshwater river,
- a gorge,
- and the Libyan Sea all in one place.
It feels more like an oasis than a typical Greek beach.
What makes Preveli special-The river lagoon
The Kourtaliotiko River flows into the sea here, creating:
- freshwater pools,
- shaded palm areas,
- and cooler swimming spots.
You can walk upstream through the palm forest for a mini jungle-like experience.
Matala Beach
Matala is one of the most famous beaches in south Crete, known for its soft sand, dramatic cliffs full of carved caves, and strong 1960s “hippie” history. It’s both a beach and a small lively village, so you get swimming, sightseeing, and food all in one place.
The cliffs next to the beach are filled with ancient caves:
- originally Roman-era tombs
- later used by hippies in the 1960s–70s
- Clear blue water
- Calm in the morning, busier later in the day
You can visit them (small entrance fee), and they offer great views over the bay. Matala is a sandy family friendly beach, which is easy to access
It’s not a hidden wild beach — it’s more of a comfortable, scenic beach with a village vibe.
West Crete Beaches
Elafonissi Beach
Elafonissi is one of the most famous beaches in Greece, known for its shallow turquoise lagoon, soft sand, and (at times) pink-tinted shoreline. It sits on the southwest tip of Crete and feels almost like a tropical sandbar.
It’s popular for a reason, but it’s also one of the busiest beaches on the island.
- Extremely shallow water (you can often walk far out)
- Calm, warm sea
- Bright turquoise and blue shades
- Perfect for families and non-swimmers
The pink colour comes from crushed shells mixing with sand. It is more visible in certain areas and seasons and is not everywhere on the beach. The best spots for pink tones are the quieter edges of the lagoon and the sandbanks away from the main entrance
Elafonissi is actually a small island separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon. You can often walk across knee-deep water to the island and explore small coves and dunes. The island side is usually quieter than the main beach.
Balos Lagoon
Balos Beach (often called Balos Lagoon) is one of the most photographed beaches in Crete, located on the northwest coast near Kissamos. It’s famous for:
- shallow turquoise lagoon water
- white and pink-tinted sand
- dramatic mountain scenery
- warm, calm swimming areas
Most visitors take a boat from Kissamos port, often combined with nearby Gramvousa Island.
