SPINALONGA
Today you will have the opportunity to admire the beautiful and wild rocky beaches around the gulf of Mirabello. From the small port of Elounda we will sail towards the island of Spinalonga. Visiting this island, whose walls hold a thousand and one secrets, is a unique experience. An atmosphere full of mysteries is waiting for you as you enjoy a relaxing boat journey. The island of Spinalonga, a little island – rock, just 850 meters round the gulf of Elounda, was firstly inhabited by Christians who used the island as a hiding place during the Roman occupation of Crete. In 1575 the Venetians constructed there a most impressive fortress, which was later converted into a colony for the lepers. The boat will stay for about one hour in the little rock of Spinalonga giving you time to go around and see the island. We return to Elounda for lunch in one of the traditional taverns. SAMARIA GORGE
Are you a good hiker and like to walk? If yes – then discover one of the most impressive ravines in the whole of Europe: the Samaria Gorge. Length 18 km, but we walk “only” 16 km. Mother Nature has cut its way through the bulky limestone masses that tower up from 200 to 2.000 m. The wideness of the ravine varies from 300 to 4 m, and we cover an altitude difference of approx. 1.200 meters. Leisurely walking you normally need 5 hours to reach the south coast. Passing by the plateau of Omalos, at an altitude of 1100 m., we continue to Xyloskalo, where the adventure begins. There is the ability of having breakfast or coffee before the walk. The hike starts quite steeply down the ravine over rocks and stones through a forest with cool springs at shady resting sites. If you are lucky, you might spot a “Kri-Kri”, the wild mountain goat. At the end of the hike, you reach the small fisher village of Agia Roumeli, right at the Libyan Sea. Here you can have a refreshing swim and a good meal in one of the local taverns. From there, we take the boat to Sougia or Chora Sfakion and then return by coach.
