Getting Around Skopelos

Getting around Skopelos is fairly straightforward, but the way you choose to travel makes a big difference to how much of the island you actually see. It’s not a huge island, and distances are short, but the terrain is hilly and some of the best spots are slightly off the main routes.

The backbone of transport on the island is the public bus system, which runs along the main coastal road from Skopelos Town. It stops at most of the popular beaches and villages along the way, including Stafylos, Panormos and Milia, so it’s very useful if you’re staying in one place and visiting the main areas.

The 5 Skopelos bus routes running all year round depart from Skopelos Chora to Glossa and Loutraki port with stopovers to the country side of the island and the many beaches. During summer, buses are more frequent, often running every 30–60 minutes on busy routes.

Several beach bus stops are higher than sea level so you have to walk some meters downhill.

Taxis are the easiest option if you want something quicker and more direct. You’ll find them waiting at the port and in central locations, and they can take you almost anywhere on the island. They’re especially useful in the evening or for returning from beaches when buses are less frequent. The downside is cost compared to buses, but for short distances the fares are still reasonable.

A lot of visitors choose to rent a car or scooter, and this is generally the most flexible way to explore. It lets you move around freely, visit quieter beaches, reach monasteries and stop at viewpoints whenever you want. The island has one main road running its length and smaller roads branching off, so driving is quite simple in terms of navigation. However, the roads can be narrow and winding, especially in the hills, and parking in Skopelos Town can be tight during peak season.

Another option that people often overlook is travelling by boat. Parts of the coastline, especially on the more remote sides of the island, are difficult or impossible to reach by road, so boat taxis or organised trips are sometimes the only way to see them. Even if you’re using other transport, a boat trip is one of the best ways to explore hidden coves and beaches.

If you’re staying in Skopelos Town itself, you won’t need transport all the time because the town is very walkable, with everything close together around the harbour and up the hillside. But once you want to go beyond the town, you’ll quickly rely on one of the options above.

Overall, it’s easy to get around Skopelos, but not completely effortless without planning. Buses cover the main places, taxis fill the gaps, and hiring your own vehicle gives you the most freedom
