Tilos is one of the quietest and most nature-focused Greek islands, ideal for hiking, swimming, abandoned villages, and slow travel. The island is known for birdlife, eco-tourism, medieval ruins, and uncrowded beaches.
Villages & Historic Sights
- Megalo Chorio — the island’s old capital, with whitewashed houses, castle ruins, and panoramic views. Walk up to the Byzantine-era Knights’ Castle above the village for sunset.
- Mikro Chorio — an atmospheric abandoned village slowly being reclaimed by nature. In summer, a small bar sometimes opens there at night, giving the ruins a surreal vibe.
- Μουσείο Ελεφάντων — small but fascinating museum about the dwarf elephants that once lived on Tilos. The fossils were found in Charkadio Cave.
- Monastery of Saint Panteleimon — the island’s most important monastery, set in a green valley with springs and peacocks nearby. The drive there is scenic.
- Agriosykia Fortress — remote medieval ruins with great views and almost no crowds.
Hiking & Nature
Tilos is excellent for walking. Old stone paths connect villages, monasteries, bays, and ruined settlements. The hike to ancient Gera and the southern coast is especially recommended for dramatic scenery.
The island is also a protected nature reserve with rare birds, wild herbs, and very little overdevelopment. Hunting has been banned for decades, making it unusually rich in wildlife.
