The Algarve is celebrated for its fresh seafood, Mediterranean flavours, and traditional Portuguese cuisine. Here are some of the region's best-known food and drink specialties.

 

FOOD

Cataplana de marisco – The Algarve's signature seafood stew, cooked in a traditional copper cataplana pot with fish, shellfish, tomatoes, herbs, and white wine.

Grilled sardines (Sardinhas assadas) – Fresh sardines grilled over charcoal and served with potatoes and salad, especially popular during the summer.

Piri-piri chicken (Frango piri-piri) – Grilled chicken marinated with spicy chilli sauce, garlic, and herbs, a favourite throughout the region.

Octopus and cuttlefish dishes – Freshly caught seafood prepared grilled, stewed, or in rice dishes, reflecting the Algarve's fishing heritage.

Xerém – A traditional dish made from coarse cornmeal, often cooked with clams, bacon, or local sausages.

Seafood rice (Arroz de marisco) – A rich rice dish packed with prawns, mussels, clams, and other shellfish.

 

WINE AND DRINKS

Medronho – A strong fruit brandy distilled from the berries of the strawberry tree, traditionally produced in the Algarve's hills.

Local Algarve wines – The region produces excellent red, white, and rosé wines that pair perfectly with seafood dishes.

Orange juice – The Algarve is famous for its sweet oranges, making freshly squeezed juice a popular refreshment.
