Menorca’s cuisine reflects its rich history, Mediterranean location and strong farming traditions. The island is known for fresh seafood, locally produced cheeses, traditional meat dishes and high-quality local products. Menorcan food is simple, flavourful and based on fresh seasonal ingredients.

FOOD

Caldereta de Langosta (Lobster Stew) – Menorca’s most famous dish, especially popular around Fornells. This rich seafood stew is made with local lobster, tomatoes, onions, garlic and herbs.

Mahon-Menorca Cheese (Queso Mahón-Menorca) – The island’s best-known product, this traditional cow’s milk cheese has Protected Designation of Origin status. It ranges from mild and creamy when young to stronger and more complex when mature.

Sobrasada – A traditional Balearic cured sausage made from pork, paprika and spices. It is often spread on bread or used to add flavour to local dishes.

Oliaigua – A traditional Menorcan soup made with tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic and olive oil. Originally a simple farmers’ dish, it is often served with bread during the warmer months.

Baked Fish & Seafood – Fresh fish, prawns, squid and shellfish feature prominently on menus, often prepared simply with local herbs, olive oil and vegetables.

Calamars Plens (Stuffed Squid) – A traditional dish of squid filled with a mixture of its own meat, breadcrumbs, herbs and sometimes vegetables, then slowly cooked in a rich sauce.

Arroz de la Tierra – A traditional Menorcan rice dish made with wheat instead of rice, usually prepared with pork, vegetables and spices.

Berenjenas Rellenas (Stuffed Aubergines) – Aubergines filled with a mixture of vegetables, breadcrumbs and herbs, baked until golden.

 

WINE AND DRINKS

Gin Xoriguer – Menorca’s most famous drink and a legacy of British influence on the island. This traditional gin is made in Mahón and is commonly served with lemonade as the popular cocktail Pomada.

Pomada – A refreshing Menorcan drink made with Gin Xoriguer and cloudy lemonade, especially popular during summer festivals.

Menorcan Wines – The island has a growing wine scene, producing red, white and rosé wines from local vineyards, often featuring Mediterranean grape varieties.

Herbes de Menorca – A traditional herbal liqueur made with a blend of local herbs and spices, enjoyed as a digestive after meals.

Local Craft Beers – Menorca produces several artisan beers inspired by the island’s natural ingredients and Mediterranean character.

Ametlla Coffee & Local Liqueurs – Almond-based drinks and traditional liqueurs are also popular, often enjoyed after dinner.
