Skiathos Town, often called “Chora,” is the main settlement and social heart of the island of Skiathos in the Sporades. It sits around a natural harbour on the southeast coast, spreading up the hillside like an amphitheatre, with whitewashed houses, red‑tiled roofs and narrow winding streets that give it a classic Greek island feel.

Places like the house museum of Alexandros Papadiamantis, one of Greece’s most important writers, give the town a sense of history and culture, while viewpoints like the Church of Agios Nikolaos let you look out across the harbour and surrounding hills.
As the day moves into evening, the atmosphere changes noticeably. The harbour front and the central streets start to fill with people heading out for dinner or drinks. Papadiamanti Street becomes the main artery of movement, lined with restaurants, bars and boutiques, and it stays busy well into the night. Skiathos Town is widely known as the island’s nightlife centre, with everything from quiet cocktail bars by the water to busier spots and clubs that stay open until early morning.
Although the town itself doesn’t have large sandy beaches, it’s close to several of the island’s best. Megali Ammos is just a short walk away, and a simple bus ride takes you to famous beaches like Koukounaries and Banana Beach along the south coast. The town also acts as the main transport hub, with ferries arriving directly at the port and the airport only a few kilometres away, making it very easy to get around the island or travel further afield.
Overall, Skiathos Town is the place where island life is most concentrated. It combines history, scenery, convenience and energy in one compact area, making it a natural base for visitors. Even if you stay elsewhere on the island, it’s almost impossible not to end up here at some point—whether for an evening out, a bit of shopping, or simply to soak up the harbour atmosphere as the sun goes down.
