A holiday in Ixia is an opportunity to get active. There is no end of sporting opportunities and fun activities that all the family can enjoy. A day out at the beach might incorporate a bit of windsurfing or kitesurfing, or perhaps a scuba diving lesson and snorkeling with the children. You can bounce over the breakers on a jet ski, take a jeep safari around the island, or burn off the adrenaline on a go-cart track. Pay back your partner for beating you at billiards with a splat at paintball, or demonstrate your superior swing in the bowling alley.

But if you require something a little less lively, go inland from Ixia and explore Rhodes Town on foot; the island is an idyll for walkers with many sights to see, hidden villages and secluded coves to discover. Those not feeling so energetic in the glorious sunshine may opt to traverse the beautiful landscape on horseback.

If you're holidaying en-famille, rest assured there's plenty to keep the little ones amused. If you don't fancy a day in Luna Park or Faliraki Water Park, you could try one of the island's numerous well-equipped playgrounds, for example Passagio in Rhodes Town which has swings and slides, a skateboard ramp, giant trampoline, play area, sand pit, and a snack bar for Mum and Dad to watch from over a coffee. Or there's Aktaion, opposite Mandraki Harbour in Rhodes Town, designed for toddlers with soft rubber ground covering, swings and slides and a giant pirate ship. Again there is a cafe on hand for refreshments.

All children love to ride on miniature trains and The Red Mini Train runs every hour between 9.30am and 4.30pm for a 45-minute tour of the walls of the Old Town, climbing up to the citadel to Monte Smith and returning via the town centre to the aquarium, ending at the Town Hall. There are also mini trains in Faliraki and Afandou
